Linen "prize" for WGSL and a few finished items

The Weavers Guild of St. Louis has been seeking prizes for two events this year - our 90th Anniversary Guild Challenge and a monthly "Show and Share" at our meetings. I'm pasting it info on the challenge at the end of this post. Both are being organized by WGSL member and expert weaver Julie McClure. 

Knitorious, the yarn store at Watson Road and Bradley here in the City, has donated 3 cones of weaving yarn as prizes for the Challenge. They are linen and linen/cotton from Louet North America, which Knitorious will be stocking. I will be turning these over to Julie for prizes. The pure linen is labeled "wet spun" for aficionados.


I also took a pic of a few recently finished items. Both are crocheted. I expect the scarf to end up as a gift for one of my nieces. 





90th Anniversary Guild Challenge – Show Your Stuff!

For the 2016 Guild Challenge, let’s celebrate our 90th anniversary by showing the wide variety of fiber arts our members employ.  Our Guild has such a diversity of fiber artists and we should be proud to share it. 

We would like to see something from every member, no matter where you are in your creative life – new weavers, established crafts people or retiring from active participation.  We are looking for an example of what you do, such as:

·         something from your latest project;
·         something you are especially proud of;
·         something that best exemplifies what you love to do;
·         something you made to enter an exhibit;
·         something you made in the past that you love.

This challenge is separate from any upcoming exhibits, but we expect it will be original.  There’s plenty of time to choose something, as we hope to include this in the August, 2016, meeting.  More details will be coming, but put this at the top of you to-do list.

Thistle leaf lace pattern

This Thistle Leaf pattern is from the Barbara Walker Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns. It's very botanical and I think it's beautiful. I finished a cream-colored silk scarf using the pattern (Purl Soho Cattail Silk, 1 skein), pictured here, after doing a swatch (dark green) which I turned into a doily-type item with several rows of crochet added around the edge. Now I am working on a bigger rectangular shawl using the same lace pattern, out of Purl Soho's Sweetgrass (undyed organic cotton and alpaca) in a light beige-tinged gray. I love the pattern but at 28 rows (14 right-side pattern rows), I'm finding it to be too complicated to memorize. So I have to work with the pattern right in front of me.

Noro Ginga Lap Blankets

I purchased 10 skeins each of two different colors this yarn, which is a super-bulky weight yarn but is sort of light and fluffy. The colors had too much yellow and orange for my taste, but knit up into blankets, with edges worked in half-double crochet, they look pretty good. The one above appeared sort of misshapen after the knitted center was done, but the crocheted edges straightened it out, I think. The one below is the type I would make again, using mitered squares.

 After a pause in 2020, the Weavers Guild of St. Louis will hold its annual sale on Friday, October 29 and Saturday, October 30, 2021.
